Good info Sukhjeet.

I was also searching for some punjabi stuff and came across a book which might be interesting for folk music. I haven't read the book myself though.

Punjabi lok geet
by Ghuman, Bikram Singh.
Far Eastern Books, 1992.

Found an interesting website linking to a lot of books on Punjabi music , instruments, and as well as Kirtan

http://www.jsks.co.in/pup_main_kirtan_music.htm

As for the subject, we can go back to the days of Guru Nanak Dev Ji and Bhai Mardana who used to play the rubab. Even some parts of the SGGS is written in raags and kirtan is also traditionally supposed to be sung with certain raags. Then we have the influence of Punjabi poetry and lok geet. And then poetry also influencing music i.e the likes of Sultan Bahoo, Shah Hussain, Waris Shah's Heer,....... Shiv Kumar Batalvi, etc.. Then we have different types of music : qawalli, tappe, kirtan, dhadi vaar, bolianetc. The topic is very big and one can fill an entire encyclopedia with all this. (oh shouldn't we already have that in place? oh well that's another topic) and kind of vague. Perhaps you can narrow it down and focus on one aspect.

Want to know about some of the more popular songs from the early 20th century, check out '50 Glorious Years of Punjabi Music'. It's also on youtube so you should be able to find the songs and artists names there.

http://www.amazon.com/50-Glorious-Years ... 85&sr=8-16

A lot of general information can be gathered from wikipedia about the singers. Just search the name of the singer and add wikipedia as the second word on google or just go search on wikipedia website itself. Good luck.

I really don't know much myself but hope this helps a bit

Ajj kall filmaan kamliyan ho gyian. Har punjabi singer hun actor bann'na chaunda( i don't know if they ask themselves ke mainu acting aundi ae ke nahi, mere vich kee ainna acting talent ae) te comedian taan fer vi addhe actor hunde ne, oh kyon ni karange filmaan. Kinna commercialism aa gya hunn. Agge local companies kadhiyan si comedy te yearly tapes, naale singers vi sirf gaun te dhyan dinde si kinne vadiya albums kadhde si hun taan naa oh poetry ae naa singers......ehi haal comedy da ho gya. Filmaan vich taan roles de hisab naal comedian bajh janda ae............apni creativity taan apni tapes vich hi banda vikha sakda.......acting actors nu karan deyo singers nu taan at least ik Album kadhni chahidi ae 1-2 saal vich. Baki Jazzy B as a hero ton taan rabb hi bachave punjabi filmaan nu. Dasso bahleyo loko tusi kise ni vi sirf singer ni rehna...........ziada paisa ae taan produce karo koi vadhiya film, changa director, script te vadhiya naven actors nu mauka deyo taan ke punjabi filmaan da vi faida ho sake.

This is Satinder Sartaj's new song Suneha. Sartaj uses a lot of metaphors in his songs and the expressions in Punjabi are quite different from any western language. The Punjabi metaphors and similes cant exactly be translated into English, but i will try. Also, the translation will have to be in Free Verse as the same meter and diction cant be carried into English.

<strong>These are Punjabi lyrics: </strong>
<em>Bhuhian naal khusiyan di gandh kiwein pendi a ji
ik dam hasyan vich khand kiwein pendi a ji
pucho pardesian de thand kiwein pendi aji
jadon kade jande ne punjab nu
de deo suneha koi janaab nu

seene laggi khich kadi muk di ni dilan vichon
rokya ni janda suche khwaab nu
de deo suneha koi janaab nu

ohdi jehi mehak piche dil kina tang hoya
ohde jeha suha suha chawan da v rang hoya
ohde piche kandya da kine wadda jang hoya
pata v hona eh gula nu
de deo suneha koi janaab nu

pauna vichon sungadha kiwein add kar payie das
sone range din kithon mod k leyaiye das
sarotiya da keemti pyaar vekhi
sambhi sartaj de khitab nu
de deo suneha koi janaab nu

titli de khamban wali chaap laggi paniya te
dasso kithe rakhiye kitab nu
de deo suneha koi janaab nu</em>

<strong>English Translation: </strong>
<em>How happiness gets tangled with the doors
How the laughs suddenly get sweetened
Ask the foreigners how satisfied they feel
When they go back to Punjab
someone pass my message to the loved

The longing inside never leaves the heart
And neither can one stop a pure dream
someone pass my message to the loved

How the heart ached for his kind of aroma
The joys became his color of crimson
What a war of thorns was fought for him
The Rose might not even know
Someone pass my message to the loved

How can one separate the fragrance from the air
How can one bring back the golden days
Treasure the precious love of your listeners
Ensure the honor of Sartaj
Someone pass my message to the loved

The Pages are embodied with the wings of a butterfly
where shall I lay the book?
Someone pass my message to the loved</em>

There are a number of problems in translating Punjabi to English... i have tried my best to keep the meanings of the lines. I decided to submit this as an article in our article's section:

@bobbysandhu - You might need to redo the translation for the first para. I've left a comment on your article. Please go through it.

Yup! i read your comment and replied there. Also made the change. Thanks for the input.

But the first two lines are debatable. Due to the low quality of the sound, its not possible to make out exactly what he is saying. Will ask Sartaj whenever i meet him.

I distinctly remember reading in a Reader's Digest article on Mozart and/or his music that he was influenced by Punjabi music, but for the life of me can't find the exact reference ... maybe, one of these days, or one of you young computer whizzzes might succeed where I can't!
Cheers all,
