Maybe those films did well because of the lack of films at that time and also the distribution of original VHS prints. I remember watching Khalsa mera roop hai khaas on original VHS because most people did not go to theaters at that time and even DVDs weren't popular. However, Indian stores in overseas and India were notorious for making VHS copies and now DVD copies of even cam-rips. In the late 90's, films such as Shaheed-E-Mohabbat, Mahaul Theek Hai, and Shaheed Uddham Singh started to change things, but it was actually Jee Aayan Nu which forced most people into theaters. btw, I get what you're saying about romantic flicks.
