Old Punjabi Movie Songs

Postby 5jabiportal » September 23rd, 2011, 2:03 pm

This topic is about old punjabi movie songs and music. Please post all relevant songs starting with the oldest songs upto 1999 along with the names of the music director, lyricist, singers, actors, movie and the year etc.

Here is a song from one of the oldest available punjabi movies made in India after partition in 1948(I think the first was Lachchi in 1947)

Movie : Chaman

Music : Vinod

Singer: Pushpa Chopra(later Pushpa Hans after marraige)

Actress: Meena Shorie (the hero was Majnu)

Meena Shorie was the wife of director Roop K. Shorie, the famous movie director and studio owner of Lahore who lost all his film business during partition and moved to Bombay. Meena who was from Raiwind near Lahore was already in Bombay working in hindustani(hindi/urdu) films where she was introduced by the great Sohrab Modi in the mid 40's. She was also known as the "Lara Lappa" girl cuz of a famous song picturised on her "Lara Lappa layi rakhda" sung by lata in the hindi movie "Ek thi ladki"

Thanks Sarvar........please also mention(for the films after 47) if the film was made in India or Pakistan.

Here is another song from Chaman(1948)

Music director is Vinod

Lyrics: Aziz Kashmiri

The actress here is Kuldeep Kaur(the main lead was Meena Shourie)

Singer is Pushpa Hans nee Chopra...........this song made Pushpa Hans a star. She recorded it again for Jalandhar Doordarshan later in the 80's.

The First Bad Girl of Indian Cinema: Kuldip Kaur

Way before Shashikala and Nadira, Kuldip Kaur made a name for herself playing the bad girl to perfection. She will always be remembered for her 'vamping' acts in Kaneez (1949), Afsana (1951), Baiju Bawra (1952) and perhaps her most famous film, Anarkali (1953).

Born in 1927, Kuldip, or 'KK' as she was known, came from a rich Sikh family of Attari(near Amritsar) in Punjab. She was trying for a breakthrough in films in Lahore when the partition of India took place. Said to be involved with actor Pran at the time even though he was married, the two of them left Lahore together and came to Bombay. They left Lahore in such a hurry that Pran's car was left behind. Kuldip went back to Lahore even as rioting was in full swing, picked up the car and drove it all the way to Bombay!

While looking for work in Bombay, Kuldip landed up at Bombay Talkies.

I miss and like this song very much - bhande kali kara lao, bhande....

bhai ve kali vaaleya, mere bhande kali kar ja...
aaya ni bibi aaya,

Do not know the movie.
Know only Surinder Kaur among the singers.

@rkahlon: Thanks for sharing. It is not a film song though. The other "bhaande kali kara lao" song from the punjabi movie is probably a 70's or early 80's song... i just remember the first line.

Two more from Chaman(1948)

Music director is Vinod(real name Eric Roberts)

Lyrics are by Aziz Kashmiri

Vinod gave songs to Lata as well in Punjabi movies even before her success in Mahal(1949)

Dunno the singer in first one.

Singer seems to be Shamshad Begum in the second one...doesn't sound like Pushpa.

I think Meena shorey has this uncanny resemblance to Divya Bharati.

The hero in the first video is Majnu who was a Christian stage actor in Lahore and had to leave after partiton like most other people in this film.

Are old Pakistani songs allowed? If yes, then this is one very beautiful song sung by Zubaida Khanum.

Ironically, the actress in this song is another Punjabi female legendary singer, Mussarrat Nazir.

Strange to see someone else's voice on Mussarrat. Zubaida had a very nice, soothing voice.

Edda de gaane kyon nahin likhe jaande.......

Next post will be about an Indian Punjabi song.

Any old Punjabi movie song is good but here the focus is more on highlighting old Indian Punjabi movies or pre-partition movies, the history of which is being lost. Our Punjabi industry owes it to Pakistani Punjab big time for saving the prints of these movies that were also relased there until the mid to late 60's because they don't survive here in India.

Two more from Chaman(1948)

Sung by Pushpa Chopra-Hans

Music director Vinod died in late 1950's in his thirties in poverty.

Speaking of Asha Bhosle her Punjabi is so good.......cuz she was given a lot of songs by punjabi music directors in the late 40's, early 50's when she hadn't yet made it big in hindi movies, singers and music directors in those days were professionals that took pronounciation very seriously. Not many people realize that Asha sang some of the all time great numbers like the ones in Posti(1949). Asha sang all through the 70's for some of the most successful Punjabi films.

Sardul Kwatra the Khayyam and OP of Punjabi music industry made his debut as a music director in Posti. His music is instantly recognizable no matter what film. Heroine was Shyama(from Lahore) who also became a successful leading lady of hindi films in the 50's.

Sardul Kwatra (1928 – 2005). Sardul Singh Kwatra was born and brought up in Punjab’s capital Lahore. Since childhood Sardul was fond of music. Lahore was a place where Punjab’s finest maestros attained name and fame. Sardul while studying in school got the initial training in classical music from Sardar Avtar Singh. Sardar Avtar Singh possessed good knowledge of most of the Ragas mentioned in Sri Guru Granth Sahib as well as those Ragas, upon which the folk tunes of Punjab are based. He was inspired by Bade Ghulam Ali Khan of Patiala Gharana, Sardul was a great admirer of Agha Faiz of Amritsar and among the females he was especially fond of the silken voice of Zeenat Begum.

Later in Bombay the Kwatra family produced their own films.

The first production of the Kwatra family was film “Posti”. The idea took shape while the family was still in Lahore, but the partition of Punjab left the family high and dry. After a short duration in Amritsar, the family moved to Bombay virtually penniless. Most of the cast of the film had also arrived in Bombay. Majnu, a Christian stage and film artist of Lahore performed the leading male’s role as Posti. Bhag Singh performed his father’s role. The heroine’s father was a very popular actor Ramesh Thakur. The lady for the role of the heroine was still being searched. Sardul Kwatra took it upon himself to choose a heroine.

In Shyama, a seventeen year old budding actress Sardul found the heroine of the movie. Shyama, an athletically built charming girl hails from a Punjabi family. She was conversing in chaste Punjabi. Sardul’s choice received the final nod from the senior member of the family the elder brother of Sardul Singh and the producer of the film Harcharan Singh Kwatra. The film was completed in 1949. It was an instant hit. The music was brilliant. Shamshad Begum and Mohammed Rafi were the leading female and male singers. A famous Hindi playback singer Rajkumari sang for the first time for a Punjabi film. Asha Bhonsle made her debut in film “Posti”. Shyama was a natural dancer, who will instantly start dancing to the tune composed. The Kwatra family was so much impressed with Shyama’s fluent Lahori Punjabi and her natural gift of dancing and acting that it engaged her as the heroine for their second Punjabi film “Kaude Shah” made in 1952. Sardul Singh composed the music of this film too.

The video quality on the first seems bad it seems like a vhs tape, the sound is good. The second one is good but

the uploader hasn't uploaded any more songs.

POSTI(1949)

Do Guttan Kar Meriyan, Maye Meriye ni Mainu Bada Cha-------Asha Bhosle

The second song a duet is sung by Rafi and Asha. Who hasn't heard "Bhairra posti" but few realize its Asha Bhosle. The actress is Shyama but the actor is some comedian as this is a dream sequence the hero opposite Shyama as mentioned above was Majnu the male actor in the Chaman video above.

Posti song -

ve main kajjle di paani aan dhaar lai lai naa tera.

Side note - Bade Ghulam Ali Khan saab was a huge influence all over India then and even after he was gone. In a bid to follow him, we got singers like Ghulam Ali, Mehdi Hassan, Jagjit Singh, Lata too (in addition to K.L. Sehgal), Rafi - Rafi was trained by him etc.

You know, the standard of music has deteriorated more than poetry.

Here on PP, many young people are writing in Punjabi very well. Otherwise too people are writing well in Punjabi.

But now there is no wizard of a musician to compose captivating tunes because they do not have any deep knowledge of classical music to churn out lighter raag based tunes. No singer to sing them well.

If you listen to old songs, the poetry of every song as such is not brilliant if seen on paper, it is the music and voices which have made all those songs so memorable.

for e.g., aaj jaane ki zid na karo
haaye mar jaayenge, hum to lut jayenge, aisi baatein kiya na karo.......very simple lines. But when Farida Khanum sings it, they become iconic.

Coming back to topic -

Funny song -

oye majh gaan vaaleya, oh vadde naa vaaleya
baaraan paise nauwe nauwe ya dwaani mainu de ...
dwaani nahin dewenga taa bad-duaawaan dewanga,
bad-duaawaan dewanga, taan taap chad jaawega......

Film - Do Lachchian, 1960.

@rkahlon: Brilliant composition by another great Hans Raj Behl, hun kithon labhne ne eho jehe lok te eho hehe composers Punjab nu....Vinod, Sardul Kawatra, Hans Raj Behl and many more. Like Gurdas Mann sang.......Mar jaane manna kyon punjab jaanda khind'da.

Here is another one from Kaude Shah(1952)

Its a treasure of brilliant composition one after the other. Sardul Kawatra was a genious. The way he blended classical, folk and contemporary music.

Its also notable here that all these music directors were good at composing equally good sad songs, dance numbers, semi-classical and light songs not just bhangra and pop like today.

This music of this mujra was composed by sardul kwatra, harmonium was played by him as well.

The girl dancing is Shyama, the one singing seems like a good actress from her expressions in another sad song in the movie...her name i don't know but saw her in a few hindi movies too, titles say Miss Manju and Rajni were the other female leads i'm guessing Manju. The hero also has very good facial expressions i think his name is Daljit(says in the cast) not sure though.
