List Of Punjabi Movies

Postby NimpyHarjeetSandhu » November 15th, 2011, 4:02 pm

Punjabi Cinema refers to the Punjabi language filmmaking industries in the Punjab region of South Asia. There are two major film-making hubs in the region: one in East Punjab, India ( Indian punjabi cinema ) and the other in West Punjab, Pakistan ( Pakistani punjabi cinema ).
The history of cinema in United Punjab dates back to the 1930s, when the first " bioscopes " were shown in theatres in Lahore... Within 5 years, the first seeds of the industry was sown by K.D Mehra....
K.D. Mehra made the first Punjabi film Sheila (also known as Pind di Kudi ). Baby Noor Jehan was introduced as an actress and singer in this film. Sheila was made in Calcutta and released in Lahore, the capital of Punjab; it ran very successfully and was a hit across the province. Due to the success of this first film many more producers started making Punjabi films.
K.D. Mehra then made his second film, Heer Sial , in which M.M. Billoo Mehra assisted him. This film had new artists Balo and M. Ismail and Baby Noor Jehan. This film was also commercially successful.
Much research work has been done in all the major languages but in punjabi little initiaves have been taken.....
So here, we are discussing Indian Punjabi Movies.
The Indian Punjabi film industry has produced and released so many punjabi films since the release of its first sound film , Sheila aka Pind Di Kudi, in 1935. This is a complete list of Indian Punjabi films released from 1935 in the industry.
Iam not 100% sure about some movies.

Babu Feroze Din Sharf was from Amritsar and his poems were taught in the CBSE punjabi curriculum book Harf Hamesha! especially sohna desaan andar which even Doordarshan had made music videos of in the late 80's. Never knew he wrote film songs as well.

i just remember a line of one of his poems a sarcastic piece on people prefering to speak in hindostani over Punjabi while being punjabis living in Punjab.

By 1938, newly established film companies in Lahore had started churning out movies in competition with each other with the help of financiers from Amritsar, which was the main commercial centre then. Many punjabi artists who had migrated to Calcutta in the late 20's and early 30's to work in films came back to Lahore and Amritsar etc. like Noorjehan's family and Mukhtar(mai) Begum(Farida Khanum's sister) and her family.

Re: List Of Punjabi Movies

Postby 5jabiportal » November 18th, 2011, 8:33 am

I think there might be a language confusion here with "Pooran Bhagat". There was one made in Urdu/Hindi in Bombay in 1933 with KL Sehgal etc. so thats out of question. There was another 'Pooran bhagat' made in Lahore in 38 or 39 it was in Urdu/Hindi too with Karan Dewan, Anwari and Dar Kashmiri. About the Punjabi one; didnot find any info about it anywhere even in the most comprehensive lists. Also, the director A K Kardar is actually Abdul Rashid Kardar the director of Heer Ranjha the first Punjabi talkie and assistant dir. of Daughters of Today which was the first silent film made in Punjab. Kardar and M Ismail together pioneered film making in the North. Now, interestingly "Pooran Bhagat" doesnot come up in either of their filmographies. It doesnot come up in Noorjehan's filmography on the site/research project dedicated to her either while the rest of them do.

Nimpy read the above post again: Edited it.

Also, heard of Ishq-e-Punjab as a 30's movie but it doesn't figure anywhere either.

Also, do you know if any prints of any one of the pre-47 punjabi movies survive anywhere?
