Rang De Basanti director, Rakesh Om Prakash Mehra is all set to start his new film based on the life of respected athlete Milkha Singh titled Bhag Milkha Bhag starring Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor. After months of hunt for the actor and the lead actress, the director has finally zeroed in on Farhan Akhtar and Sonam Kapoor for the coveted roles. The film is scheduled to be released on 12th July 2013.
Farhan had recently traveled to Punjab and Delhi to meet the legend and his family. The young producer-director-actor is said to be undergoing serious training for the role which can probably establish him as a serious acting talent.
Rakesh had been searching for the lead actor for quite some time. After toying with some big names, the short stature, no handsome looks and a husky voice of Javed Akhtar’s son seemed to befit the biopic.
Nicknamed The Flying Sikh, Milkha Singh was rejected by the army thrice. He subsequently enrolled in the army’s electrical mechanical engineering branch in 1952 when his brother Malkhan Singh put in a word for him, and experienced his first sport outing at its athletics meet a fortnight later. Determined to be the best and realizing his talent as a sprinter, he took to training five hours every day under the watchful eyes of coach Havaldar Gurdev Singh.
Singh represented India in Olympics and Asian Games. He won Gold Medals in 1958 and 1962 Asian Games. He lost the Olympic Medal in 1960 games by a whisker despite being the favorite for gold medal in the heats.
The shooting of the film will commence in Feb 2012.
