Amitabh Bachan will soon be seen on the big screens of Hollywood in “The Great Gatsby” with Leonardo DiCaprio. The Great Gatsby is a novel by the American author F. Scott Fitzgerald. First published in 1925, it is set on Long Island’s North Shore and inNew York City from spring to autumn of 1922.
The novel takes place following the First World War. Director Baz Luhrmann is all set to bring the big screen version of “The Great Gatsby” which will be filmed in 3D in Australia. Leonardo DiCaprio will take on the role of Jay Gatsby, the mysterious millionaire, while Carey Mulligan will take on Daisy Buchanan and Tobey Maguire will play Nick Carraway, the book’s narrator and protagonist. What is most important is Amitabh Bachan will be there in the well.
Warner Bros. and Village Roadshow Pictures has begun production on Luhrmann’s Australia-based adaptation of The Great Gatsby, which will see Indian superstar Amitabh Bachchan playing Meyer Wolfsheim – a shadowy gambler and troublemaker, a character who helps DiCaprio’s character make money when he first comes to New York after the First World War. While it’s a small role, this will be Bachchan’s first Hollywood movie, and is likely to expand the international audience for the $125 million production.
After over four decades of contribution to Indian cinema, Amitabh Bachchan is finally stepping out. To quote Amitabh Bachan “Time has been spent well and hopefully judiciously. Days ahead will tell us whether it was fruitful or not.” The film will be distributed in 3D and 2D by Warner Bros Pictures and in certain territories by Village Roadshow Pictures.
As for the rest of the cast, Edgerton said that they’ve been undergoing some serious education to get ready for to take on the all-time classic novel, which is set in the 1920s. The film is being made on a US $150 million budget and due for release in 2012 worldwide. “The Great Gatsby” has been adapted for cinema four times previously, including the popular 1974 remake starring Robert Redford and Mia Farrow.
